Story

  • Fonterra dairy recall shakes China consumer confidence (2013-08-04)
  • China has ordered the recall of potentially contaminated milk imported from New Zealand after Fonterra, the worlds largest dairy exporter, found in its products bacteria that can cause botulism. With nearly 90 per cent of Chinas imported milk coming from New Zealand and Fonterra by far the biggest single supplier, Beijings response to the dairy scare is being closely watched. Two companies under Chinas largest beverage producer Hangzhou Wahaha Group, Wahaha Health Food Co and Wahaha Import & Export Co, infants and childrens nutrition company Dumex, and Shanghai Tangjiu Group were found to have allegedly imported problematic dairy products from Fonterra, according to the website of Chinas General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine. It also issued a warning to consumers over three batches of Nutricia infant formula made in New Zealand.    Photo by Imaginechina
