Story

  • China may soon take advantage of its solar assets (2010-09-16)
  • China established itself years ago as one of the worlds leading producers of solar energy equipment, and significant portions of the countrys vast landmass enjoy excellent exposure to high-intensity sunlight. Governments at all levels across China have declared their determination to reduce carbon emissions, decrease dependence on foreign energy supplies and increase the share of renewable resources in the national energy mix. Yet with all of this, the country has made surprisingly scant use of solar energy at home. Now, however, that looks as if it may be set to change. Citing the most recent available data, analysts note that China is home to hundreds of manufacturing plants turning out solar panels and modules. It produces between one-third and one-half of the worlds total supply of photovoltaic solar cells. But it accounts for 1 percent to 5 percent of the working installations.    Photo by Imaginechina
