Story

  • Chinese farmers kill cows to cut losses in tainted milk scandal (2009-02-12)
  • Chinese farmers culled their cows to cut losses in Anningqu town, Urumqi (Urumchi) city, northwest Chinas Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region as the tainted milk scandal hit the local milk market. The local milk purchase price plunged to less than 1.1 yuan (US$0.16) per kilogram and dairy companies had even decreased their purchase for fresh milk. More than 200 local cow farmers poured away nearly 20-ton milk every day and 40 of them had to send their cows to the slaughterhouse and sell beef to cut losses.    Photo by Imaginechina
