Story

  • An eastern Notre Dame: Sacred Heart Cathedral in Guangzhou (2019-04-17)
  • Sacred Heart Cathedral in Guangzhou is one of the most magnificent two-steeple Gothic buildings in China, the largest stone-structured Catholic building in Southeast Asia, and one-of-four stone-structured Gothic churches in the world (the other three are Notre Dame de Paris, Westminster Cathedral and Cologne Cathedral). Located at downtown Guangzhou on the north bank of the Pearl River, Sacred Heart Cathedral is one of the few churches in the world to be entirely built of granite, including all the walls, pillars, and the twin towers. Known as a Stone House by locals, it has a total area of 2754 square meters, 35 meters wide east to west, and 79 meters north to south. It is 58.5 meters high from the ground to the spire. Designed by French designers and built by Chinese craftsmen, the Sacred Heart Cathedral was built in 1861 at a cost of 400,000 francs, comparable to Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France.    Photo by Imaginechina
