Story

  • Two on trial in Chinas milk powder scandal (2008-12-26)
  • A melamine producer, Zhang Yujun, and a dealer, Zhang Yanzhang, are on trial in the capital of north Chinas Hebei Province. The hearing is underway at the Shijiazhuang Intermediate Peoples Court. Zhang Yujun and Zhang Yanzhang were accused of illegally concocting and selling the so-called Protein Powder, which was mainly composed of melamine and malt dextrin. It was then added to raw milk to make it appear high in protein content. Police said they found their illegal production workshop in the outskirts of Jinan, Shandong Province. The two are accused of producing 600 tons of the fake protein powder from September 2007 to October of this year. The workshop is the largest source of melamine in the country, police said.     Photo by Imaginechina
